OpenAI opens DevDay 2026 with GPT-6.1 Sol, Codex on Linux, and always-on Dots agents

OpenAI kicked off DevDay 2026 on September 29 with three launches at once: GPT-6.1 Sol, a cheaper coding model that nearly matches its flagship on performance, Codex arriving on Linux and mobile, and Dots, a new line of always-on personal agents with their own cloud computer.

A coding model priced at a fifth of the flagship

OpenAI opened DevDay 2026 on September 29 with three separate launches instead of one headline product. The first is GPT-6.1 Sol, a coding and professional-work model that the company says nearly matches its flagship GPT-6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use, and similar tasks while running at roughly a fifth of Astra’s standard token pricing. Cached inputs go even lower, priced 95% below the model’s own standard input rate, which matters most for workloads that repeatedly hit the same context. OpenAI also said a faster variant, GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast, is coming within days, generating tokens up to eight times faster than the standard model inside Codex specifically.

Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, picked up two changes that developers have been asking for since it launched: a Linux build and a version that runs on phones. The refreshed Codex CLI also adds voice steering and an /agents view for tracking multiple delegated tasks at once, alongside a code review mode built into the ChatGPT desktop app that can leave an automatic first pass of feedback directly on GitHub pull requests or GitLab merge requests.

Dots: an agent with its own computer

The biggest structural change is Dots, a new category OpenAI is calling always-on personal agents. A dot keeps running after the laptop closes, learns a user’s preferences from ongoing feedback rather than a single setup step, and gets its own cloud computer and browser to act with instead of borrowing the user’s session. It connects to more than 4,000 apps and can be reached mid-task through ChatGPT, a voice call, or Slack and Teams, with texting listed as coming soon. Dots run on GPT-6 Astra and ship first to Pro and Business Premium plans in eligible markets, with Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare access arriving as an admin-enabled beta that’s off by default.

“

“An agent that keeps its own computer running after you close your laptop isn’t a chatbot anymore, it’s a coworker with its own desk.”
