Google bans all gambling ads targeting Croatia starting Oct 7

Google will ban all promotion of online gambling content targeting Croatia on Google Ads starting October 7, revoking every existing advertiser certification for the market as part of a broader wave of gambling policy changes in 2026.

Every certification revoked, no new ones accepted

Google confirmed the cutoff date directly in its updated policy language: all promotion of online gambling content targeting Croatia gets prohibited on Google Ads starting October 7. Every existing certification held by a gambling advertiser gets revoked on that date too, and Google won’t accept new certification applications for Croatia going forward, closing the door rather than just tightening it.

Who actually gets hit isn’t the operators themselves so much as the layer built around them. Affiliate sites and media outlets that rely on Google Ads to push traffic toward gambling platforms are the ones losing their main acquisition channel here, since the restriction targets the promotional content rather than gambling operations as such. An operator can still run a site in Croatia; what disappears is the paid-search and display advertising route affiliates have used to send Croatian traffic there.

Timing overlaps with Croatia’s own advertising crackdown

Timing lines up closely with Croatia’s own crackdown, even though Google maintains the two moves happened independently of each other. Croatia’s HDZ government rolled out sweeping advertising restrictions on January 1: a watershed banning TV and radio gambling ads for most of the day, a full ban on billboards and other public-space placements, and a rule barring digital publications from linking directly to gambling operators at all. Bonuses and free spins can only be advertised on an operator’s own site now, celebrity and influencer endorsements are banned outright, and sports sponsorships survive only in stripped-down form, a name and logo with no promotional messaging attached. Every ad now has to carry addiction-risk warnings and age restrictions too.

Croatia isn’t an isolated case inside Google’s own policy machinery either. The company has pushed through 58 separate gambling and games policy updates across different jurisdictions in 2026 alone, touching Colorado, France, Ireland, Australia, India, Vietnam, and Peru among others, on top of a broader global gambling policy revision back in August. Croatia’s ban is one entry in a year where Google has been steadily rewriting the rules for gambling advertising market by market, arriving in the same stretch where EU officials are separately debating a bloc-wide iGaming tax, rather than issuing one blanket global policy and calling it done.

“Google says the timing with Croatia’s own advertising crackdown is a coincidence — maybe, but a platform revoking every gambling certification the same year a government bans billboards and daytime TV spots isn’t exactly independent-seeming.”
