Spotify adds AI Persona badge, cuts fake artists from recommendations

Starting in mid-September, Spotify will attach an “AI Persona” badge to artist profiles built around a synthetic identity — and by default, pull their music out of both editorial and algorithmic recommendations.

What the AI Persona label actually targets

The badge isn’t about whether AI touched the production — it’s specifically aimed at artists whose identity itself is fabricated: a photorealistic face and backstory attached to music that was never made by the person it appears to represent. A musician who used AI tools to produce a track under their own real identity isn’t the target here, only the ones passing off a synthetic persona as a real one. Disclosing how a track was actually made falls to separate tools entirely — AI Credits and SongDNA — which Spotify keeps distinct from the identity badge on purpose.

Spotify is relying on three separate signals to catch these profiles: voluntary self-disclosure, which opened on August 11 through Spotify for Artists; internal review combining human moderators with automated detection tools looking for identities that read as photorealistic but fictional, initially focused on profiles above defined audience thresholds; and a new option letting listeners flag profiles they suspect are synthetic. Anyone flagged as a “Likely AI Persona” gets notified directly and can appeal the label through the same artist dashboard.

Where the badge shows up, and what it changes

None of this blocks anyone from actually hearing an AI Persona’s music. The badge changes what gets pushed toward listeners who haven’t asked for it — editorial playlists and algorithmic recommendations both stop surfacing an AI Persona by default, while the tracks themselves stay fully playable and searchable exactly as before.

Following the artist directly overrides that default, reinstating their music in personal recommendations the same way it would for any other artist. Where the actual badge shows up is more mundane: the profile banner and About section, search results, and track rows inside playlists — everywhere a listener might run into an AI Persona without meaning to.

Deezer reported AI-generated uploads crossing 50 percent of its total catalog this year, with 93 percent of those tracks earning few or no plays — a flood-the-zone approach streaming platforms have mostly tolerated until now. Spotify’s badge doesn’t stop anyone from uploading AI music; it just stops the algorithm from doing the flooding on the artist’s behalf.
